Love What You Do-The Better Choice

In our daily life, we perform lots of tasks, be it blogging, studying, traveling etc... Most of them are the tasks what we love to do. It has been a human nature to get a crack on those things which he likes best.(see my previous post, Bend It Like Beckham/The Human Mind) But, it is never foolproof that what a person loves to do will be something good! A pick pocket loves to empty your pocket, but that is not a good choice, you will agree. So, we must concentrate on loving every bit of the tasks in our daily life that we perform. In doing so, we get curbed from those bad choice as well maximize the efficiency in doing the work.

Last weekend, I along with my friend had to visit the administrative block of our college for getting some information on admission in the new academic year. It was the peak hour in the office and hence we had to keep waiting for about an hour for the meager 5min information the authority later gave us! While we were stranded in the midst of official hustle and bustle, we had the time to enquiringly investigate what the 4th grade officials were doing in their respective tables. They had to sit openly and perform their tasks, and so, we could see what they exactly were doing. Very soon, my eyes caught a 4th grade official doing the task of copying the marks from the mark sheet of the students into a file that was kept by the college for its own record. On interaction with the official, we came to know that this was the only work he was assigned to do from morning to evening...On hearing this, my friend, also my classmate, put up the remark that perhaps made me feel the importance of loving what we do. My friend said, "O God! What a boring job!". I alerted him not to say so in front of the official. But my wise friend went on the extent of saying that he would rather resign than spending the whole day on such a lifeless task. The official, looked up, and it seemed that he will get up and then take my friend's collar and thrash him. But surprisingly, with a warm smile he asked us to take the seat. I was frightened, so I sited myself on one of the chairs and so did my friend. The official, closed the file, put down his old fashioned round spectacles, and asked us our introduction and the cause for being here. We gave him the details and said sorry for the unmindful remarks my friend made. The official said, that it was quite natural for us to say what we said, because we have not learned the art of loving what we do. He said that, he had been doing that now for about 10 years!
He was just like us when he joined work, but realizing that it was no use cursing and lamenting about the nature of work, he started to love it, and now he loves what he does. He can do that boring job for the whole day without a whine. He asked a person to bring the information papers we came looking for, and in the meantime he told us a story, that I will like to share.

Once in a governmental office worked a man and a woman in the same designation. The woman brought her 4 years old child, who could not walk due to some problem in his legs, to her workplace as there was none in home to take care of the child. The work of the man and the woman was same. The man found the work he was assigned to him quite boring and was surprised how the woman could do the work without any feeling of boredom. This uneasiness of the man regarding his work came in notice of his boss. The boss decided to teach the man a fruitful lesson. The boss, from his office at the 10th floor of the building, called on both the man and the woman in the ground floor, and asked the man to bring a heap of files and the woman to bring her child up to his office in the 10th floor. He gave strict instructions to avoid the lift, and come by the stairs. So, the man and the women set out climbing the staircase, to reach the office of the boss. The man carried a heap of files and the woman carried the child on her lap. On reaching midway, they both started to huff and puff. But still carried on, they were nearly exhausted when they reached the office of the boss, and on reaching there, the man threw the heap full of files on the ground. But, the woman, who carried the child on her lap, though equally exhausted, put her child tenderly on a chair. The man asked the woman how she could be so normal after the hefty task they performed... The boss rose from his chair and answered the man that, she carried her child which she loved so much and therefore she equally loved the task of carrying her child to the 10th floor. On the other hand, the man did not love what he did, and so he was frustrated and thus felt more exhausted, that also reduced his efficiency.

In the meantime, our information papers arrived, and it was handed to us. The official told us in his own way, that he loved what he did, and also threw light on the work ethics that we should follow...We thanked the official and returned back, but not before promising to ourselves to apply in real time what we learned from this particular incident..And so, here I am loving every word that I am writing in this post...

~ Thanks
